Wix Studio vs. Wix

At Olya Black Studio, we’ve been crafting websites with Wix since 2012 — back when Wix was just a single offering. There was no Wix Studio, it was a single platform that felt like a revelation at the time. It made web design accessible to everyone, not just developers. No need for code, no steep learning curve — just a brilliant, drag-and-drop solution that felt almost magical. With Wix, we could create beautiful websites by simply moving elements around on the screen, giving us the freedom to focus on design and creativity. We truly fell in love with it.

As both Wix and our own expertise grew over the years, Wix Studio emerged — a more advanced tool that catered to professional designers and developers like us, giving us even more control and flexibility. It became the perfect next step for us as we took on more complex and custom projects.

At Olya Black Studio, our transition to Wix Studio wasn’t just a decision — it was part of a journey we’ve been on for over a decade. As one of the leading Wix Partners, we were honoured to be into the so-called Wix Insiders group of experts who spent months testing and helping develop the platform. It’s a little piece of our heart, and we’ve seen it grow firsthand.

In August 2023, we were invited to Israel for the official launch of Wix Studio, an unforgettable moment that felt like a natural evolution for us. By then, our projects had grown in complexity, and we knew from the inside just how powerful this new platform was. For us, adopting Wix Studio wasn’t just about moving forward, it was about staying in sync with Wix's evolution, a path we’d been on together for years.

The timing was perfect. As our clients’ needs evolved, so did the tools we had access to. With Wix Studio, we could push our creativity even further, designing fully customized, responsive websites that matched the complexity and scale of the brands we were working with. It felt like the platform was evolving with us — and we’ve never looked back.

Now, with both Wix Editor and Wix Studio available, we have seen many instances of confusion between the two platforms. Firstly, it's important to understand that this is not about defining which is better, both are excellent depending on your requirements and abilities. Secondly it's important to understand which platform is the right fit for your needs.

We will go into the various small differences in another article, today we want to cover the one major difference.

You can't build responsive websites with Wix, only Wix Studio supports fully responsive web design.

Many people understand responsive websites as "mobile version friendly" and that's partially correct. What responsive website actually means is a website that will scale proportionally to any screen size or format, not just mobile. Wix Editor websites will be static, while Wix Studio will respond to the size screen width and height.

Wix: DIY website builder

The Wix Classic Editor remains a great tool for anyone who wants to build a website without diving into technical complexities. Its drag-and-drop simplicity makes it easy to bring your ideas to life, whether you're launching a business, sharing your portfolio, or starting a blog. It’s where many of us fell in love with web design, and it continues to evolve with new features and capabilities to keep up with modern needs. Wix websites are static, you can't scale the content of your website to fit different screen sizes, you are forced to keep all the content within grid lines which is the size of an iPad. When displayed on a bigger screen the design will remain at iPad size. If you design for a bigger screen then the reverse is true, with the page exceeding the display area.

Wix Studio: The powerhouse for agencies

Now, Wix Studio takes things to a whole new level. This platform is designed for businesses and designers who need more advanced tools to create custom websites. It’s built to handle complex designs and fully responsive layouts, making sure your site looks and works flawlessly on any device. Designing a website with Wix Studio can be more time-consuming, as the design process is more intricate and detailed.

But the common thread for both editors is that they are fully supported by Wix: sharing the same dashboard, same plugins, widgets and apps to manage your business online. Both continue to roll out new features and improvements, ensuring users can access fresh tools to enhance their websites.

Is there a way to upgrade a Wix website to Wix Studio?

Unfortunately, upgrading from Wix Classic to Wix Studio isn’t an option due to the significant differences in their underlying technologies. If you want to take advantage of Wix Studio's flexibility, the only way forward is to rebuild your site within the new platform.
